Tutorials

Here you will find a series of tutorials to help you get to grips with mokey. You will find the tutorials in Section C of the mokey manual. Download the latest mokey PDF manual here.

Tracking

The key to mokey is understanding the implications of the following sentence:

The tracker in mokey is a 2D plane tracker

Until you really understand what this means you will most likely not get very good results when you use the remove, matte and stabilize module. If you don't after reading this chapter, please give us a call. We want you to understand.

Working with Proxies

mokey allows you to build and track selections, save a project and then reload it with a different clip. The main use of this feature is for handling high-resolution material such as HD and 2K. Tracking is computationally intensive, and you can often save time by tracking at a lower resolution.

Simple Object Removal

The vertical poles in this shot were used to aid tracking of the 3D camera motion. The goal in this tutorial is to remove them. Playing through the clip, you will see that as the poles move across the background the background behind them is revealed. mokey can thus replace the poles in each frame with the background areas from other frames. To do this it has to track the backgrounds very accurately. Note the significant shearing of the background induced by the camera motion. This would make manual cloning of background regions very difficult and time consuming, because both the position and the distortion of the background areas needs to be matched. The mokey tracker is designed to cope with distortion like this.

Complex Object Removal

Now to some wire removal work! In this tutorial we will show you how mokey was used to remove the wires in this commercial for ING. It was produced by CCCP.be and finished at Condor Post Production in Brussels. We will remove the left wire and let you have a go at the right wire yourself!

Using Cleanplates

A new feature in mokey v3 is the ability to import cleanplates. This is useful in cases where the background behind an object you want to remove is not revealed anywhere in the shot and hence mokey's remove algorithm can not remove the foreground object completely just by looking at the other frames in the shot.

Creating Mattes

mokey allows you to build and track selections, save a project and then reload it with a different clip. The main use of this feature is for handling high-resolution material such as HD and 2K. Tracking is computationally intensive, and you can often save time by tracking at a lower resolution.

Using the Stabilizer

The mokey stabilizer has a number of controls that allow you to achieve several different effects. This tutorial will show you how to:

  • Remove camera shake from a tracking shot
  • Fill in border regions blanked out by the motion compensation
  • Smooth the camera motion
  • Achieve the effect of a locked off camera
  • Set fixed frames

Restoration and Stabilization

This tutorial will show you how to

  • Repair large holes and scratches and other defects in specific frames by replacing them with the correct regions in other frames.
  • Stabilize the repaired frames to remove jumps between frames, without leaving any blank borders around the image.
